Jessie wasn't as bad as people were making her out to be. but i have to say that she needs to learn to sing clearly...and not drink alcohol on stage. she mumbles way too much and i can't understand one thing she's saying. the rhythm and beat sounded good.

Personally, I didn't like her. Her band was awesome and I believe the songs have a lot of potential but Maureen is right, she mumbles and you can't understand a thing she says. I've seen her twice and by the second time wasn't any better!

I've seen her twice and by the second time wasn't any better! I appreciate you and Maureen telling me what you think. I just thought it odd that NOBODY had really mentioned her. I (like Deb) bought her CD a while back and enjoy listening to her in the background while I work. There are a couple of songs where lyrically, they seem repetitive. That gets my attention, but generally she's pleasing and soothing to listen to in the background. Don't know what I think of the drinking on stage part -- I guess that I am used to seeing guys that generally wait till after to drink anything of significance or who are teetotaler's. I am not a prude, but if I am traveling and/or paying to see a show, I expect some degree of soberness....and not sloshy performances. Thanks for the feedback.

i kind of agree with what the others said about jessie. i didn't really get the chance to listen to her stuff before the show so her set was pretty much my first impression. i had heard some mixed reviews but i thought she was ok. my biggest complaint was her lack of ennunciation. it was really difficult to understand what she was saying. she has potential and i feel like she's probably an artist that i would like on cd but her live performance didn't really do much for me. not a horrible choice for an opener, but i would have preferred someone who was a little more upbeat and less of the soothing/relaxing variety.

I also think that part of the problem was that she played 13 songs! Granted they were mostly on the short side but it just felt like it was never-ending and all sounded so similar.
She sounds so different on her myspace....

I think its an injustice that an opening act plays almost the same amount of songs as a normal lifehouse set...

Jessie had a small plastic cup of wine onstage in Indy and only sipped from it a few times. It seems like most of the bands I've seen lately take a beer or two onstage with them (an accident waiting to happen!), so I don't think that was out of line. I definitely disapprove of musicians who are showing the effects of drink on stage, but I don't think she was. We talked to her briefly after the show and she was very nice.
I wonder if part of the mumbling was a sound system problem. I have a LOT of trouble with lyrics and understanding people onstage, but was able to write down enough phrases from her set that I could identify all but two or three of the songs, so she must have been fairly clear when we heard her.

i guess i just see it as, at a normal job, you don't drink on the job...this is their job, so they shouldn't be drinking while onstage. i don't care what they do once off. and her speaking voice sounded affected by it...but that might just be the way she normally sounds, i'm not sure. it's just something that irritates me and makes an artist lose points with me.

You like Cavashawn and I think I've only seen them perform once without at least one of them having a drink (or drinks) before their set. They're still good.
I don't normally drink on the job, since I have to think a lot. However, I know that one beer doesn't have much effect on me, so at midnight during the height of tax season I'll drink a beer if the boss offers me one. It's all about knowing your limits. Being in a band is NOT a normal job and I think a lot of bands have a LOT of practice drinking, so their alcohol tolerance is pretty high. It doesn't set a great example for the younger members of the crowd, but then neither does cussing. It doesn't make me like the music any less, UNLESS it's obvious that they've been drinking. I'll never go to see Howie Day again.
That being said, I wasn't at the same show as you were and it's certainly possible that the alcohol levels were different. Everything seemed okay at our show.
I love these discussions! It's like debate class.

I do like Cavashawn. and the reason i like them (besides good music, nice guys) is they don't drink onstage. if people have a beer before they go on, then how am i going to know? i'm saying i don't like it when an artist brings their drink with them onstage and drinks it during their set.
and what really constitutes as a normal job? a job's a job. and whether someone has practice at drinking should have nothing to do with it, because it does affect you on some level. i don't know, it just bothers me. i really didn't think it would turn into a debate...merely stating something about her set i didn't like.

I should have typed before and during their set. Scott at least, almost always does have a beer onstage with him. He's not obvious about drinking it, but he does (unless something has changed since July). I think they're super nice guys, too.
Truly, if you are used to drinking, one drink just doesn't have an effect.
I think I was bothered because I thought you were saying that she was drinking onstage, so she wasn't clear. I went back and re-read your post and that's not what you were saying at all. They were two different thoughts on her performance, so I apologize. I think we'll just have to disagree on the drinking, though. Each job is unique and what is expected and accepted in one job might not be acceptable in another.

So, I ended up going to the Allentown show at the Croc Rock. It was an amazing show!! Nothing like the mess of last time. Jessie was well Jessie. I was able to see matt before the show and I had a chance to thank him for playing Illusions! He said he was more then happy to do it and was glad i had asked him to play it!! A few noticable changes to the set...they opened with I Saw. I think I died and went to heaven. That was the song that really solidified my devotion to his music...lol! He also sang All Been Said Before for my sister since it's her favorite. He did it during the solo time and just blew me away...his guitar playing...yeah amazing! They didn't do an encore, they played straight through there set, kinda weird but still good! He also did Take On Me and did a rather interesting version of Billy Joel's Allentown! He was nice enough to meet his fans after the show! Had a wonderful conversation with him and my sisters. He is a hugging machine man, I think he hugged me like 4 different times! haha. I told him not to stay away to long and he promised he wouldn't. I also snagged another set-list! I have a feeling that after this tour he is going to set out to do some solo shows. He mentioned it in Philly and last night! I think I'd die and go to heaven! I love the full band but I think you see how talented someone is when it is just them and there guitar. Here are my pics, I didn't take as much as i usually do...I'm trying to cut back haha! www.new.facebook.com/album.php?aid=43394&l=89608&id=503312843
