Wow, I have a lot to say about last night. Sorry this is sooo long. As you know, I can't be concise:
I had the most amazing time last night. It was sooo cool to see Matt Nathanson play at my college. I was able to convince a lot of my friends and people from my floor to go, and EVERYONE was soo glad they did, and officially love matt
I'm a member of the club that organizes the concerts and such on campus, so I actually got to work the show. My official position was "hospitality", which means I was supposed to make sure that Matt was having fun, show him around campus, do stuff for him, but unfortunately that never happened. My day started at 12, when I showed up to help unload the sound equipment. It was so cool to see the concert from the other perspective. I helped connect cables to things, unload some drums, and I actually ended up setting up matt's mic, amp, and a bunch of speaker (all the equipments besides guitars were rentals). Matt was supposed to arrive at 3, but none of the band got there at that time, so I spent most of the time running around in the rain doing errands (getting signs, coolers with ice, take out menus, carrying water bottle cases, etc).
Just some quick things before the show
- I think around 3:30-4 ish, his tour manager and band showed up (in two cars, they didn't have a bus today), and we helped carry some equipment from the tour manager's car. But Matt still wasn't there (turns out he got lost on the turnpike)
- When Conrad got there, I ran out to greet him, and help him carry his stuff into the building. I grabbed a giant heavy drum head lol. We were walking and talking to Conrad, and I was clearly struggling with the drum, so he offered to take it from me, but I told him it was my job to carry it. After like 15 more steps, he laughed and took the drum from me (and carried it with ease ).
- Around 5:30, the opener showed up, and I was sent to take her to get dinner. I had to wait until she was done so I could walk her back, so unfortunately, I missed Matt's arrival. You can't really hear the stage from downstairs where the dressing rooms are, so after we took her back, I walked back to the stage area, and shock, there's Matt onstage soundchecking! I almost fell on my friend lol.
Katelyn pretty much summed up Matt's show. I can't remember any songs that Kate hasn't already listed. Matt was soo funny. I was like falling over in laughter during the show. I can't remember many specific things, but I was almost in tears last night. It looked like the entire front room was filled, so I'm estimating about 600 people showed up (we didn't open the balcony seating, so I'm guessing it was a little under that)
After the show, everyone tried to get a setlist, and I recognized one of the crew people that I helped set up with. I tried to pull some strings and get him to hand over the set lists, but instead he asked me to help clean up everything. I got on stage to help, and tried to get the set lists for everyone, but apparently we weren't allowed to give them out. I started to clean up the stage, and unplug stuff, remove the mics, etc. Anyway, once everything was pretty much packed, they said we were going to go downstairs into the green room to meet Matt!!! soo exciting. I tried to text the lifeho's to let them know that he was still inside, so they shouldn't stand in the rain yet, but my phone just died on me. Battery ran out since I was using the phone to take photos
When we (about 15 or so people from the club that helped out) walked into the green room, Matt was on the piano (and singing quietly) playing "Have a little faith", and then when he was done, he got up and told his band it was a great song. He asked how we liked the show, and we told him we had a blast. He said he had a really awesome time too, and it was nice to play a full set. We said we wanted a group photo (no time for individuals), so we all got together for a photo. This one girl knew I really love him, so she was originally standing next to him, and then made room for me, so I could stand right next to Matt. It was soo sweet of her. I was also right in front of Conrad who remember me from carrying his drums and said hi. We took a few photos, and then just talked to Matt. He asked if anyone wanted stuff signed, and people said sure. Matt said he needed a sharpie, so being the prepared concert goer that I am, whip out my entire bundle of colorful sharpies that I usually keep in my drawer. Matt was like "whoa!! taste the rainbow". After one girl got something signed, no one else asked him for an autograph afterwards, so I whipped out a poster that the college was using for promotion for myself (it was a giant picture of matt w/ concert details at the bottom). When matt saw it he was like "wow, this is crazy. that's me!!" Then he drew little nipples on his body on the poster LOL. He signed it and then wanted to personalize it, so he asked me for my name. I'm not used to personalized autographs, so I told him it was complicated, and he said "well, that's an interesting name 'its complicated' ". I told him it was Yuliya, and he tried to spell it out verbally, but couldn't get it, so I had to spell it out for him. Some kid joked that Yuliya isn't a real name, so after he wrote my name on the poster, he wrote: "Yuliya is real. She is magic" LOL. I was beyond ecstatic. Afterwards, we were all standing in a circle, and Matt said, "I'll see you guys later. Oh, wait, it's Friday isn't it? So I guess I won't see you later" (not quite sure what that means). So I said "October 4th" and he got really excited and said "TLA?" and I nodded, so he was like "yeahhh" and gave me a high five lol. He said that he really loves Philly and needs to do something special at Philly. He started talking about how everytime he plays in Philly, he does something special, and needs to think of something for this time. Afterwards, he had to go, we we went back upstairs. My phone was dead, so I headed back to the dorm to charge it. I was glad to hear that the rest of the lifeho's managed to find Matt afterwards
oh, and one more random note: during the show, he said he was going to be VH1's new "you oughta know artist" and he just got interviewed for it that day. He seemed really excited about it.
my poster lol
