Everyone is Someone came out on the Wicker Park soundtrack from 2004 placing it between SCF and S/T. YES Brian you're so right! I knew I was missing one! I still think the first attempt towards Elliott was Goodbye (which incidentally was redone for Paper Cuts, so we'll hear it soon) but it didn't have quite as many vocal layers as Everybody is Someone. That song was from Wicker Park, and that soundtrack came out in January of 2004 so he would have written and recorded it in 2003. That puts it right around the same time he wrote Better Part of Me and Midnight in Philadelphia, since he said those tracks were written on their last tour before they recorded the self-titled (which was mid-2003 I think). Philly also went insane with the guitars, there are like four or five acoustic tracks all over each other! Maybe Running Away was in that mix too? It's totally not Elliott but Jason still harmonizes with himself on the whole thing. Ordinary Pain is similar in the chorus too come to think of it. Long story short, I think Paper Cuts will be a cross between the Americana folk rock from parts of S&M (Near Life Experience, DWMWIO), and the singer-songwriter style seen in the songs between SC and ST (Everybody is Someone, Better Part of Me). We've already heard a chunk of it in OOTW, albeit redone to match the pop on the record, but I think the Target bonus tracks (Clarity, Après La Vie, and Exhale) are our best indication of the sounds we'll hear this summer! Amazing call on Goodbye. I totally didn't place it in this category until I heard the leaked partial studio from years ago. Lots of vocal layering there. I totally forgot it was on Paper Cuts, so imagine my excitement at the moment to know we're going to get a full studio version. I always attributed it more to The Bends/OK Computer era Radiohead. Jason was really feeling him some Radiohead on SCF. Heck, the intro to Empty Space is totally a nod to Airbag. But then the studio version leaked and, you're right, the vocals definitely link more towards Beatles/Elliott. Dang, we need to get Jason in here to talk shop!

Goodbye is my all time favorite LH song. I'm not against how the music has evolved and their choice to use auto-tune. Vocal layering can sound pretty neat, sometimes it crosses a line which doesn't resonate well with me personally. I'm extremely excited to hear all of the new music Jason is releasing (I love Elliot Smith BTW). Either way, I love hearing new material and there's nothing better than hearing a song a song for the first time from your favorite artist.

Not sure whether the finished version will be closer to this original studio take:
...or this live version which is so eerie and moody (and I love it):

It sounds like a B-Side but still awesome! I've been checking Canadian iTunes relentlessly over the past week and it didn't show up until this morning even though the date says 03/17. Weird. I like the beat and general vibe a lot! Gotta give it time on the vox and lyrics, which I have two interpretations of right now. SPOILERS AHEADThe satellites drifting in my mind Taking me far beyond this town Pushing me further out of reach Or bringing me all the way around The satellites somewhere in my eyes Taking photographs of who I was There's a slideshow of who I want to be But it feels like lightyears away from me Chorus: It might be that all I need is space My silence only seems to let you down Feels like I'm running out of ways Of keeping my feet closer to the ground The satellites moving in my heart Pulling me close to honesty I'd walk the world and back again If I could find out what she needs from me It might be that all I need is space But my silence only seems to let you down Feels like I'm running out of ways Of keeping my feet closer to the ground Feels like I'm running out of ways Of keeping my feet closer to the ground The satellites drifting in my mind Taking me far beyond this town Pushing me further out of reach Or bringing me all the way around It might be that all I need is space But my silence only seems to let you down Might be all I need's a little grace As these words are searching to be found

I think you guys have a great theory! It definitely sounds like this newer material is channeling Elliot Smith.
I'm so mad, I can't find Satellites anywhere on iTunes. When I search Jason Wade nothing comes up. Grr. But thank goodness for Spotify!

Looks like Satellite was pulled from the US iTunes store. Went back to check if any other tracks popped up and there's nothing now. Thankfully I jumped on it quick.

It's pulled from iTunes Canada as well. Looks like a mistake, he advertised on Facebook again today that Paper Cuts is the first song he's releasing.
