Awesome! Though it sounds a bit country...I hope that's not the whole album.

Awesome! Though it sounds a bit country...I hope that's not the whole album. I think he said a long time ago that it was a folk record; Clarity was from it and so was Wish minus the string section so it'll probably have a countryish feel. The main thing is for it to not have countryish lyrics Which, if Clarity is any indication, it won't

I love clarity and with this one, I'm waiting for the full song to give a verdict..but i love Jason's darker voice. Also, I don't necessarily mind country😂😂😂 and i love folk..

Definitely reminds me of some of the b-sides from Smoke and Mirrors.

Did anyone else feel like there was a lot of autotune in the track? I just want to hear Jason's raw voice! Still looking forward to the other tracks.

I'm guessing Jason produced all this stuff by himself, or maybe with Jude......so they probably chose to do it. It's not so much the tuning that's bothering me, but the weird layering of the vocals which they've been doing for the last 3 records or so. Gonna keep an open mind though until I hear the rest of the stuff

I might be reading too much into this because it's what I hope the reason is to be for the layered vocals the last ten years or so, but Jason is a really big fan of Elliott Smith and he was well known for multiple vocals layers in the studio. Not that he needed it because his voice was painfully beautiful. I started hearing this early on in the LH recording sessions with the more singer songwriter songs (Midnight in Philadelphia and Better Part of Me) that came out before the album. That was the first album post Elliott's death and I can kind of see the connection being made there.
Or, like I said, maybe I'm just reading into it what I want because I love Elliott and want his legacy to live on through artists like Jason.

If you're reading too much into it than so am I because I've been thinking this too! Those two songs, and even earlier with the studio version of Goodbye from 1999, were all very much Elliott-esque in their layering and I think it's something Jason has enjoyed doing for a long time. They went a little overboard for some of the tracks on S&M and Almería, which were less about layering and more about auto tune (Had Enough, By Your Side, Only You're The One), but I agree that the industry in general doesn't like rough edges anymore. That was what made Clarity my favourite song off OOTW; no perceivable vocal effects and a very old-school recording format where you could really hear the live band come through. Hourglass too

Hourglass too Do you think it's safe to say that "Everyone is Someone" was the first effort towards this? Musically it's very Beatles/Elliott and the vocals are layered like crazy. Now I'm trying to remember if that song came out pre-SCF or shortly after. I think after.

YES Brian you're so right! I knew I was missing one! I still think the first attempt towards Elliott was Goodbye (which incidentally was redone for Paper Cuts, so we'll hear it soon) but it didn't have quite as many vocal layers as Everybody is Someone. That song was from Wicker Park, and that soundtrack came out in January of 2004 so he would have written and recorded it in 2003. That puts it right around the same time he wrote Better Part of Me and Midnight in Philadelphia, since he said those tracks were written on their last tour before they recorded the self-titled (which was mid-2003 I think). Philly also went insane with the guitars, there are like four or five acoustic tracks all over each other! Maybe Running Away was in that mix too? It's totally not Elliott but Jason still harmonizes with himself on the whole thing. Ordinary Pain is similar in the chorus too come to think of it. Long story short, I think Paper Cuts will be a cross between the Americana folk rock from parts of S&M (Near Life Experience, DWMWIO), and the singer-songwriter style seen in the songs between SC and ST (Everybody is Someone, Better Part of Me). We've already heard a chunk of it in OOTW, albeit redone to match the pop on the record, but I think the Target bonus tracks (Clarity, Après La Vie, and Exhale) are our best indication of the sounds we'll hear this summer!
