so i got really sick over the last 2 days and yesterday evening i started vomiting a lot, like whenever i drank something it would come back out so I went to the hospital and was put on the IV all night. They told me I had some kind of bacterial infection. I dunno. I spent the night in hospital. I'm back home now but still feel really crappy. I'm drinking water again but very slowwwwly and with a bucket next to me just in case I'm sorry to hear about that Dan...Maybe you got a food poisoning? Salmonella Spp (i do a lot of tests with this bacterium) ? Take a look at this... vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~mow/chap1.html

actually, santa's red image comes from Coca Cola, though it's origin is in Sinterklaas (which is still celebrated in part of western Europe), but it got kinda lost in translation when we were in charge of Manhattan, and later on after the Civil War the misinterpreted Sinterklaas became Santa Claus in NY (something to do with the non-British traditions or something).. and Sinterklaas' colors are red & white, so maybe the red comes that way too

The Dutch don't have to look up Sinterklaas info, lol. I sometimes have to look up stuff for the details, but my head is filled with these kind of not really important facts And I have a book somewhere that has like a gazillion of useless (but fun nonetheless) facts But in the case of Sinterklaas/St. Nicolas/Santa (and some other figures related to these legends) I could go on a while without that book. In the end there are influences from Judo-Christianity, Islam, Nordic mythology, Celtic rites, Nether-Germanic tradition & commercial interests. But it would be a pretty long story to tell in this randomness thread. And some parts of the story could be slightly sensitive to some people, so I'd rather not. I could write it up somewhere else one day though, would give me something to do on a slow day, hehe.

Okay, here's something REALLY random. My work Holiday Party was this evening. I was in charge of karoake. We had only one Lifehouse song to choose from. There was a lull in the volunteers. So...I decided to do the unspeakable. I completely butchered a karoake version of "You and Me." :-[I feel blasphemous having done absolutely no justice to the song. But, I also feel a little happy because people started waving their hands together and at least one person asked me who sang it. They guessed the Goo Goo Dolls. I told them it was Lifehouse. They repeated the name like they were going to try to remember it. But, I don't have a lot of confidence. Lifehouse is just not one of those catchy names. So.....upon further analysis: Sorry Lifehouse for murdering "You and Me," :'(but it might have gotten you at least one more fan. ;D ADD: NOT TO BRAG OR ANYTHING, BUT THAT'S SOME PRETTY DARN GOOD USAGE OF THE SMILEY SPECTRUM!

This reminds me of when Jessi and I sang "You and Me" in a gay bar in Grand Rapids. True story.

This reminds me of when Jessi and I sang "You and Me" in a gay bar in Grand Rapids. True story. ^lol! what was the reaction of the patrons there? And speaking of Christmas in the Netherlands -- where, by the by, everyone is supposed to know how to ice skate? -- anyway, they have Sint Nikolaas and his black assistant Zwarte Piete, who pops naughty children into his bag...and the Sint leaves a bag of presents at the house with a thunderous knock on the door and kids put out some hay for his horsey... and then they have chocolate letters and oranges... But even bigger than Christmas is New Year's Eve -- so i've read! where they serve olie bollen -- oil balls? lol -- anyway, advanced HPNY aka Gelukigge Nieuw Jaar! (hee, methinks i totally screwed up the spelling on that ) wow, what a random, rambling post...eh, might fix it up later (or not! too lazy...)

You were pretty close though! .. and Sinterklaas (Sint Nicolaas) isn't instead of Christmas, as we celebrate it on December 5th/6th. But it is the origin of Santa Claus. =)
And his black assistants (Zwarte Piet (s) / Zwarte Pieten (pl) ) are basically the naughty kids that he took back with him in his bag so they can work in his workshop (because they were naughty), and they then deliver the presents (through the chimney, which is why they are black).
