I randomly found $19 in my purse today while grocery shopping, it was awesome especially considering I forgot my credit card at home and when I was looking for it I found cash and no card. I couldn't believe it though, I dig through my purse everyday and I never carry cash so I have no idea where it came from. Would you believe that I slipped it in your purse while we were in Utica Ok...maybe not, but glad you found some extra cash -- that can always make one smile!

I wouldn't either^
Today has been soo long already. I stayed up all night writing this paper. I for some stupid reason cannot write a paper unless I am under pressure. I just can't sit down and think unless I know that I only have hours left to get it done. Anyone know of some tips I can do to better prepare myself for writing paper so that I get more than 3 hours of sleep???

Here's what I used to do, and I don't know if it will help you because I don't know what kinds of techniques work for you! We'll give it a shot though. OK, so when you get the assignment, go home and write down some of what you may have in mind. Ie: topic sentences and main points. Once you gather the list over time, it may help with the formation of the paper and your ideas. This way it will be easier to prevent writers block and all of the other ugly things that happen when trying to jam all kinds of thoughts into your head at once!

Wish I could help Jessi, but I have the same problem. I had two major essays due these past two weeks, and both I stayed up ridiculously late finishing.
Wow, I truly didn't realize how late into October it is. I was typing up an assignment today, and wrote the date and didn't even realize it was already Oct. 20th. The past two months have just flown by!

It's an archaeology/anthropology thing, ... everyone in my studies did that, and my housemates who study anthropology do the same thing. I have the same thing with tests/exams.. I even tried studying for them way ahead of time, but I did considerably worse on those tests than the ones that I only prepared lastminute. And the best papers are usually written under pressure. That's when the mind focuses on the actual matter best, because it has no time to think of other things or to overthink the issue. It just focuses on what needs to be done and then you do it. I just accepted it. I don't like getting by on hardly any sleep, but apparently that was necessary for me to do that kind of stuff.

Jessi, I had the same problem as you in college. I think more than anything else about school, I hate writing. But it's a fact of life, so I've been trying to make the whole writing process more manageable. It's the writing that really pains me, so I do everything I can to shorten the amount of time I actually spend on writing. What has worked well for me is to always start with an incredibly detailed outline. When I'm putting together an outline, I find that I can focus on the content of the paper and the logic of my arguments because I don't have to deal with grammar, sentence structure, transitions, and all that stuff that I hate. In the outline, I would lay out the entire structure of the paper, and have all the quotes/references figured out. The very fact that it's not actually "writing a paper" kind of eases my writing anxiety, and it's made it easier for me to not leave papers until the last minute. If I have an outline, it's also easier for me to started on the actual writing because I don't have to stress about what to write about, since the whole thing is already layed out. All I need to do is to string the ideas together in pretty language . Papers seem to be graded 50% on substance and 50% on style. I'm not a naturally gifted writer, so this is always the hardest part for me. Having an outline is useful here because all I need to focus on now is to make things sound good at the paragraph level. My outline already ensures that my paper as a whole is structurally sound, so I don't have to worry about reworking big blocks of text. I save time because I don't get into a situations where I end up having to delete half the stuff I wrote. Other things that help me cut down on the amount of time I spend writing so I can go to bed earlier... EndNote. It's a lifesaver, especially if you have lots of references. It makes the bibliography for you (in any style you want) and keeps track of all citations in your paper. I also find that the one situation where I naturally get started on papers ahead of time is when it's for a group project. I feel horrible if I'm the one slowing things down and making people stay up late, so I always feel motivated to get these papers done ahead of time. I dunno how to harness this motivation for non-group papers... maybe partner up with a friend who's in the same class and make a commitment to read over each others papers a day or two before it's due? Wow, I just wrote a lot despite the fact that I hate writing .

I noticed you wrote a lot too lol. The paper I wrote is for my minor in history. The class is wonderful, I just hate writing papers. I'll do an essay any day if I can write it by hand, but I hate actually typing. Thanks for all the tips though!

School has taken over my life lately...it feels like I've done nothing but take tests for the last few weeks. Two of my roommates and I are heading to new york city for the weekend for my birthday. I'm stoked! We're seeing underoath and saosin on sunday and copeland and lovedrug on monday. I'm extra excited for copeland because they're my favorite band and I've never been able to see them headline before. It's on my actual birthday too, so I can't really imagine anything much better.
