Apalled, (being the Kearney ring leader that I am), when I surfed this site and could not find my boy listed on here. So, I'm officially fullfilling my duty.
"Listen to Mat Kearney!!!!" There, how's that for subliminal? Yeah, I know, I try. Even got the super snazzy new banner for extra propaganda.
So, all you who know me know that I have been promoting this man from the start...almost like his long lost-slightly older, (but better looking than him) sister. LOL. Well, I worked my third show for him a week ago, and I kind of went in with low expectations, 'cause last time I got to chat with nearly everyone else but him in Chicago, even spending like hours upon hours working with his younger brother. And I spent a heck of a lot of money to be there available to work his show, and had to suck it up when hanging out was not in the cards for me that day. BUT...this story truly is going somewhere...last Monday my hubby went with me to a show in Michigan and when I got there I saw his band's tour bus and went on inside the venue to meet with his manager to get set up, and Steve wasn't around so I walked outside and there was Mat and all the guys sitting in the grass goofing off and Mat was taking video footage of Will, the drummer studying yoga moves. I asked where I could find Steve and they were all like super helpful and then I said I was working merchandise for them and they were all like super sweet and thanking me, introducing themselves (as if) and Ty, the guitarist who I've spoken to here and there personally through myspace was like "yeah...you sent me a note last night! I know you." Anyways, they invited me to hang with them while I waited and it was great. I got to watch their antics, especially Ty give Cason a haircut (the very first one he'd ever given in his life) with some flimsy kid scissors and a plastic fork for a hairbrush. They actually asked to borrow my hairbrush out of my purse! LOL. One of the guys, Greg was wearing a Blood:Water Mission shirt and saw my Blood:Water nalgene bottle and started talking to me about that. And Cason and Ty are big fans too. Cason was like..yeah...you've got my bottle! I knew Ty was a fan too. But I guess Greg went to school with the guy who oversees all my volunteer work that I talk to nearly every other day. Mat and I talked some about his brother. Then my husband came over and hung out with them too. We were able to chill with them for about a half an hour, just us and the band. I didn't take pictures or act at all "fannish". But the really cool thing is Mat actually requested to take a picture of me. He took one while I wasn't paying attention, showed it to my hubby. Said..."Hey, pretty flattering, right?" Then got my attention and asked to take another one with the cool church chapel in the background. I was like (is this for real? Mind thoughts.) Then he shot some video of us here and there along with the band goofing off. It was quite fun. They're hillariously witty. We had a great show! Wonderful sales! And I actually had a perfect view of the show. Mat was quite free in his performance, I think it felt really good to him to be performing in a church type atmosphere again. (Plus he said so.) He sang some of his older worship-inspired music (just a tad) and did a cover of a great song for the first time in his life. That was great. Very spiritual as well. Then we spent an hour and a half getting all of our work wrapped up. Got my free $50 worth of gear. My husband came back in after being gone with the manager for 45 minutes and said Mat's outside if you want to go say hi with all the other fans. He's standing in the rain taking pics with those who waited. So I brought my Johnny Cash book to get it signed. Mat saw me, but was surrounded by anxious women and girls (and a few men), but he smiled the heads up look my way. Then the manager came by and announced that mat would have to get going. And I thought...darn. No signature this time. (And I never even try to get autographs. I've met him before and never even asked for one for myself. But I wanted my book signed because it reminded me of him. The substance of the two men feel similiar. BUT....then his manager comes up to me and Doug and said, not you guys...don't go anywhere. The band wants you guys to come along with us to a pub down the road. We want to hang out till the bus leaves, if you have time, and buy you some drinks. I'm like....so totally keeping my composure against all odds and enormous pressure to be the geek that I am! ;D But we met them over there. And it was really nice, Mat was delayed with all the photo ops everywhere he walked, but when he actually had leadway to walk ten feet in a direction of his choice he came to our little table and leaned over us and thanked us many times for coming out and helping. He joked a bit, the I asked him about signing my book and he nearly flipped, so excited because it's his favorite book. We talked about it and the other books his brother made me promise to read, which I loved, Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller and Velvet Elvis by the one and only Mr. Rob Bell. Then wrote me a note in my book. To Amie- I wrote "Won't Back Down" about this very book" Anyways, by nearly 2:00am we had chatted with his manager for nearly an hour and a half straight about everything in God's green earth and we had a long drive ahead of us. The band would be pulling out in about 20 minutes anyways, so we got up to leave. The band extended thanks again and joked around with us one last few minutes. And we were off. I may or may not have squealed once I actually got into my car. By the way, on numerous occassions the manager said he'd hire me in a nano second to be the full-time on the road merchandise manager if Doug would let me do it. That was pretty cool. Well...until after Doug joked that on some days he might would be able to part with me and then the manager jokingly offerred, hey, if you don't want her, I'm totally willing to share my bunk with her. LOL. Not quite as funny or sweet. Doug braced himself . B It was such a perfect night though. Truly over the top blessed beyond all expectations. And we got to know an up and rising performer Meiko who was the opening act when hanging out during Mat's show for nearly 2 hours. You guys need to check her out. She's incredible.
I'm sorry. I know that was epic and I'm sooo not into doing that anymore...but seriously guys. Those of you who know me know that my loyalty to Mat is like Lifehouse to nearly all of us on here. This was seriously a great day for me. There, now it's out of my system! Now I just have to stay up till 4:00am to actually get the work done I set out to do for Blood:Water. I guess bragging does have it's price.
