Am I the only one who really doesn't like the video? The atmosphere really doesn't go with the tempo of the song. And it appears as though the "couple" in the video are physically/emotionally abusive to each other. That's not something you should "brave the weather" for. You should get out of that relationship.
I like the song. Just not the video. :/

The video was just off to me. The song itself is growing on me. It's a typical radio single in the current age of pop music and it's somewhat overproduced, though that's always been an issue with much of the band's catalogue. However, underneath there are some interesting things happening in this song. Especially the intro and the first verse that have an NNF-era sound hidden beneath the poppy outer shell, afterwards there's (and I think Julia mentioned this also) an infusion of energy that is reminiscent of Spin. As far as a radio single goes it's an okay song and I do think it has hit potential as it easily bounces around in your head for hours after you listen to it but as a standalone song, it's not giving me enough (yes, I'm very demanding as a listener ). As part of a full album though, it will serve an important purpose of balancing out heavier/complex songs with some good old uptempo fun. Or at least, that's my hope.

I think this will be one of my favorite songs of theirs if they ever do a Jason solo-acoustic version of it. Or really anything assembling this type of acoustic version: www.youtube.com/watch?v=R61-I293zR0But if they stick to doing "live" versions like this, this song will probably never fully grow on me: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtNoG21mQjEReally though, a live acoustic version of this song will be great! Especially if they keep it simple and truly unplugged; nothing like the last Walmart Soundcheck session they did. Bring back the old acoustic AOL Sessions from the Stanley Climbfall days! Or the Dorito's One. This song could really hang with Spin, Out of Breath, Wash, Am I Ever Gonna Find Out if it's given that kind of treatment.

After Flight I am pretty dissapinted by Hurricane, it's an ok song, but nothing special, or a song that I'd listen over and over again. I am really trying to get myself to like it, but it's just not doing anything to me. And the video, oh god that video, it's beyond terrible!!! A cheating asshole and his abusive girlfriend fight and get back together, WTF!?! If she is dumb enough to take that d-bag back, they deserve each other. I am very dissapointed with this video, it puts out the wrong message, at least to me. And about the new album cover, if I would have participated in that contest, I'd be quite pissed right now. I feel sorry for all those people, especially the one who won.

And about the new album cover, if I would have participated in that contest, I'd be quite pissed right now. I feel sorry for all those people, especially the one who won. The new cover is just a photo of the guys overtop of the original cover; the border is straight from the line drawing (and the person who won still would have gotten their money). I wouldn't be surprised if they include the original cover in the album booklet too. I participated in the contest (I submitted four covers) and mainly did it for fun, so no hard feelings my way!

To me, still, the fact remains that if you hold a contest for an album COVER design and then change the album COVER afterwards, there was no point in hoding the contest in the first place. Even if they stick the design somewhere in a booklet or on the back of the sleeve. I didn't participate (because I have no skills in designing such a thing) but if I had, I wouldn't be happy about it.
They may end up using different covers for different outlets and the winner of the contest may end up being one of the alternatives but we'll see.

However, underneath there are some interesting things happening in this song. Especially the intro and the first verse that have an NNF-era sound hidden beneath the poppy outer shell, afterwards there's (and I think Julia mentioned this also) an infusion of energy that is reminiscent of Spin. I think it's still my favourite part of the song. I can hear chords from HBAM in it, and Jason's vocals are also borrowed from HBAM at first, and then it really gets that flow from Spin. Well, Spin and Hurricane, it's all about energy moving around and I appreciate it that with this song, and probably this album, there's more thought, a real concept behind every detail (which reminds me of their Stanley Climbfall album). I remember Nikki, our friend from LHF mb, talking some time ago that they were focusing on reconnecting with their roots lately, that they spent a lot of time playing their old songs and analyzing them, they kept re-discovering their B-sides songs, trying to withdraw inspiration from them. I think "Hurricane" and "Flight" are already showing that this album might be full of musical quotes from their past, as "Flight" reminds me of "Learn you inside out" and "Everything"... It might be a sort of "past meets present" album and I am really curious how it will work out. Even in the cover contest criteria they mentioned the concept of passing time, and "Hourglass" as a theme for SEVEN. As long they keep this sound fresh, it might be a really good thing. As to the way they sorted out the contest thing... just... *facepalm* . I am relieved that the winner doesn't seem to be a die hard Lifehouse fan, just a graphic designer, so at least he'll get the money, but as a fan I would feel very disappointed and even deceived. And even if you win money, you don't create artwork only for money, right? It's your baby. As LH are artists themselves, I really don't get it how could they do something like this, that cover with the photo covering 90% of the winner's project is some bad joke. I am also sorry for other fans. At least the good thing is many people could present their talents thanks to this contest. But the way LH handled this... someone must have lost touch with reality and respect for the fanbase. Unfortunately it's not their first mistake in the last years, which is also weird, knowing how long they're already in this business.

Maybe I'm the minority, but I honestly feel no animosity towards the group for the whole cover ordeal. Three months ago when they put up the contest, they had a name in mind, and got tons of great feedback in the form of submissions (and were vocal in being extremely appreciative of it all). They pick a winner, give her or him $1000 and promised a signed copy of the album when it's released, and then realize that they made a mistake with the title. We all make mistakes, and in this case they felt like the title wasn't appropriate; you can't blame them if that's how they feel. After all, music is art; art is all about feeling and emotion. They want the finished product to be the best it can be, and whether it was after mixing and mastering that they had a change or heart or something else, they then came to the difficult decision of changing the title and therefore the cover art that goes along with it. This is not Jason and Bryce sitting in a dark room plotting evil things to make their fans feel miserable; this is maintaining their artistic integrity. If they really care about their fans, they'll try to put out the most cohesive, highest-quality complete package that they are capable of producing, and that includes the music and everything that goes with it. Changing the title is not a small feat that they nonchalantly decide in five minutes; it takes some agonizing over and analyzing of the album from all angles to determine what is best for it.
Also consider this: how do we know that they didn't solicit Muledraws (the contest winner) to design the final artwork? It draws heavily on the aesthetic of the line drawing in the detailing, so I wouldn't be surprised if they worked with the winner to create the final cover. As much as fans wanted their covers to win, we must be conscious of the fact that wanting our covers to win is for self-centred purposes (I mean this in a literal sense of the term, not with a negative connotation). Lifehouse is not looking at it in a self-centred way, but in an artistic way; they have made a career from being artists, and as an artist myself I understand that one must treat a work with its own respect and do what is best for the work, rather than what will make someone else personally happy but for the sake of the integrity of the work itself. The fact that they would make such a major change this late in the game and after all that they've done so far suggests to me that they are really taking the album seriously and not treating it with carelessness. It bodes well for a high-quality finished product.
Just my $0.02 (or £0.02, whatever floats your boat).

I understand your argument and it is valid. However, the way this played out with the contest seems a little funky to me. They may or may not have included the winner in the designing of the final album cover (or maybe this newly published cover ends up being only an alternative cover or online cover or whatever), that I do not know, we'll have to see about that.
But if they weren't set on the album title or using the contest artwork, it would've been more professional to have communicated that in the contest criteria. That elements with title/band name/band photo should be designed in a way that they can be switched out/in. Either that or first figure it out and then hold the contest.
But that's just my opinion.

I think what I am missing from them is a lot of clarity..as to the album cover: well, money is all fine and dandy..but I'd be royally pissed. even if they feature the rest of the thing on the inside of the booklet, or back...it's not a cover it's a background then.
changing the title would not have necessarily meant having to change the cover and HOW is this better than everything people submitted? it's a band pic? interesting.... I hope they balance the album to include radio friendly things as well as real gems.

I have listened to Hurricane a couple of times now. The first time I heard it, I found it "meh". It didn't do much for me. The second time around it wasn't much better. But it is starting to grow on me, the more I listen to it. I'm hoping that this will be true for other people as well. It needs some airplay for people to get a few exposures to it, and hopefully then it will get some momentum on the radio.

I listened to the low-fi radio clip about a dozen times before the song came out on iTunes, and I've listened a couple dozen more times since and quite like it now. Lifehouse has never been a band where the first time someone hears a song they're instantly hear-over-heels for it — their music is like a slow-release medicine that way, after a while it keeps getting better and better (at least for me). I was really against Smoke & Mirrors when it first came out, and now I love it; same with Almería...
And I think the album will have its share of gems, Jason said several times that he hasn't been this excited to release an album for a very long time. Apparently he worked with James Newton Howard on more than just Hourglass, so I'm expecting a really lush orchestral sound on several tracks (probably some of the new titles, like Firing Squad or Hurts This Way, maybe even Wish). The fact that he snuck Wish on the album says a lot about it too...

I've just listened to Hurricane for the first time and am disappointed. It's a decent, catchy, radio friendly song, but after Flight (which for me is LH back at their best) I was expecting more. I haven't watched the video, but from the descriptions above it sounds like more thought should have gone into the kind of message they are sending out.
I love the change of album title - Out of the Wasteland is much more interesting than Seven...but I really don't like the change of album cover. I think the artwork they chose is fantastic, and I have no idea why they are choosing to cover it up with another band photo. Maybe they could have worked with the designer to change the album name in the original artwork. Oh well, in the end it's more about the music than the cover. I'm hoping that the overall feel of the album is more like Flight than Hurricane, with more deep and meaningful lyrics, and less radio-friendly singles. I am very glad to see Wish is on the track list!

Are they gonna start promoting and supporting this thing anytime soon?
I can't believe no radio appearances have popped up yet where they actually just talk about the new album and play a live acoustic of Hurricane or anything. Don't they always do things like that? Sure, there's still some time here, I'm just impatient, but still!
