Ive been debating buying the new album. One, because Im not too impressed on the first 3 listens Ive given the early leak and two, the things overpriced.
I decided 'what the hey!' and decided to go pick up the CD on release night. Just like Ive done with every Lifehouse record dating back to SC. I hit up Best Buy as they are the biggest retailer in the United States for music (well, at least right now). I see the price 11.99 for the standard 10 track and 16.99 for the 13 track deluxe. I think there is a price mistake. What label in their right mind would sell a 49 minute compact disc for $17 + tax? That's over $18 US right there on a SINGLE CD! No DVD bonus, hell, not even an extra CD like the S&M deluxe! (Which was still priced cheaper).
So I go to the register to ask to take another look at the price. Nope, scans in at 16.99. I had to put it back. I cant believe I did that but damn near $20 for a CD when it will for sure be $5-$8 on Amazon used by Feb/March...
my first impressions of the album are all over the place but I know one thing for sure -- its not going to sell at that price. Not to mention there is not a single song on it to make people want to go pick it up that are casual listeners. They can just download "Raindrops" from iTunes for a buck. Problem solved.
Ill post my review in another thread, but I just wanted to start a thread on the pricing and the HUGE mistake their label made with Best Buy for first week sale pricing. Again, 16.99 for a 49 minute CD? Wake up guys.
This album is going to tank ... and its not just the music that will do it.

Well I agree, the price is extremely high for a 13 track album. I think the "bonus tracks" is just a way to raise the price to sound like you are getting something special.
I never spend $20 on a CD.. except for Lifehouse. They're my favorite band and I want to support them. Their music isn't the same and I don't love it like I used to (their first four albums, five if you count DLD) but I still want to support them because of how they helped me through their music in the past.
I'd probably pay $100 for a deluxe edition CD even for only a couple tracks all because it's a Lifehouse album. Insane? Absolutely.

Slightly off topic from the price, I was very surprised by the availability of the CD. For various reasons, I didn't pre-order the album. I decided to pop into Barnes and Noble after work to pick it up, but it wasn't on the shelf and the cashier had no recollection of seeing it all day. When I got home, I went to my local barnes and noble and their system said they had the CD, but it wasn't anywhere on the shelves. I called another B&N and they said they had the regular but no deluxe version. I searched my local Walmarts online to see who had the deluxe version and none in my area carried the deluxe version (I wasn't sold out there -- I called one, and they said they never carried the deluxe version). The nearest one that did have it was quite a distance away. The Target by me said they didn't have the CD (either version), but the person wasn't sure if it was just sold out or they never had it to begin with. This is very surprising to me because I've never had such a problem before. Granted, I usually pre-order the CD, but I like to go to the stores and move the LH CDs to the front, so I usually see what CDs the store has in stock.
edit- In regards to Target, I don't know if they ever carried it because their website has no record of Almeria online.

CD sales in stores are generally dying, it's not because Lifehouse is not selling.

Walmart had 3 or 4 copies of the regular version. No deluxe. Their website said two stores near me had "an unknown availability" of the deluxe version but I was going to drive 30 minutes out of my way for something I already preordered so I just bought the regular version since I always buy their CD from a store on release day.

Yeah after my initial $16.99 sticker shock at Best Buy, I went to Walmart to check their stock & they had NO LIfehouse CDs what-so-ever. Kind of disappointing.
regardless, the price is still too high. im willing to bet Almeria's first weeks sales will be abysmal. Had they priced the normal at 9.99 and the deluxe at 11.99 there would have been much better numbers.

They will sell the majority of it via digital services like iTunes/Amazon anyway. I'm not too shocked about the unavailability of the CD. It's a dying format and a waste of money when you consider all the costs that come with it like manufacturing, printing, art work, shipping, buying shelve space etc.

FYE had both versions, but much, much, much more expensive.

Just to give you an idea on the what I was talking about...
Lifehouse debuted at #55 on the Billboard 200 chart w/ "Almería". Their last release "Smoke and Mirrors" debuted at #6. "Who We Are" was at #14.
I dont think falling back 41-49 positions on a week-of-release was their plan when they changed their sound to a more radio-friendly pop format. This marks their worst album debut in the band's history and you cant blame it on the "times", S&M was just 2 years ago and did fine on release week.

While I agree with everything you said, I don't think you can really call it "radio friendly pop" in this case. Just "pop" would suffice...
And yeah it seems to be doing quite poorly. The video fell off the VH1 charts almost instantly after coming out.
Hopefully they'll get the message...?

Are you saying that the album is not doing as great because of the pop-feel to it? If so, I don't agree. I think Smoke and Mirrors did well because of a catchy first single. Between the Raindrops is nowhere near as catchy as Halfway Gone.
Also, I think Smoke and Mirrors was leaning towards pop as well. Maybe more pop-rock, but still quite poppy.
