Lifehouse ready to move on towards next album

Nearly a year and a half after the release of its fifth album, “Smoke & Mirrors,” the members of Lifehouse are happy with what they accomplished — including a No. 6 debut on the Billboard 200 chart. But they’re also ready to move on, says frontman Jason Wade.
“We’re just kind of winding down,” notes Wade, 31, who is Lifehouse’s chief songwriter, but on “Smoke & Mirrors” did more co-writing than before, with the quartet’s manager-producer Jude Cole, Richard Marx, Kevin Rudolf and others. “I feel good about (the album), but I think it was probably the most interesting and kind of the most arduous one we’ve ever done.
“I wasn’t as prolific as I was in my mid-20s, when I was writing two or three songs a day, so I reached out and did more co-writes, and I think it was really helpful for me. When you’re writing by yourself for 10 or 11 years, you get bored with your own tricks, so if anything it was nice to see how other people do it. I just feel like it helped me to get out of my shell a little bit.
Now, Wade notes, he’s “transitioning back to writing songs on my own,” but he anticipates incorporating some of those things he learned from his collaborators on the new material.
“I can already feel like I’m coming from a different angle on things, which is good,” he explains. “Like with Kevin Rudolf, he doesn’t pick up an acoustic guitar and write a song. He brought all of his drum loops and his keyboards, and he kind of creates this atmosphere of music before the song starts to happen.
“I thought that was pretty interesting, so maybe that’s something I’ll try on my own. There were a lot of things like that I may try, in fact.”
