Hey guys!! As a lot of you know, I’m a huge My Favorite Highway fan! They had their first major record label CD released in May of this year, and everyone on the boards should definitely check it out!! I did a review of this amazing album
Album: How To Call A Bluff
Artist: My Favorite Highway
Label: Virgin Records[/b]
The album starts off with 4 up-tempo energetic songs. The first track, "Simple Life" is an upbeat pop-song about desiring more to life than being "simple". It leads into the brand new song (not appearing on the original [unsigned] release of the record) "Go". Go is a great song that is probably one of the catchiest. Dave’s voice really has great range in this song. The third song, “Say So” is the band’s first single off of record (check out the music video here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWvY3Ym4Xtc). The lyrics in the song “It’s like she takes me up to ten, but she leaves me at eleven” are perfect to describe the album as well as the object of the song. This album will leave you on a high that can only be fixed by replaying the album. Getaway Car is another fast song. As said by David Cook, it’s about “chasing your dreams. Trusting everything to the wind and going for it”. The sound stands out by its catchy bridges and loud energetic chorus. The fifth song is “Bigger Than Love”. This song should be called “Bigger Than Life” because that’s how it feels. If you only check out one song from this record, this should be it!! The song showcases the wonders of love, telling the listener that “nothing’s bigger than love”. The song builds up to a great climax that will have listener with no choice but to sing along to the anthem with the band, and feel the energy in the song. This is one of my favorite highway’s song-writings at its best! Following BTL is “Dreamer”, another entirely new song on the re-release. On the original album, I wouldn’t hesitate to say that “Bigger Than Love” was my favorite song. Now, “Dreamer” is giving it a run for its money. This song is bursting to life with all the energy packed into it. I haven’t heard a song with so much energy from any band in a while. The chorus is filled with the words, every girl wishes to hear “Baby I know you’re afraid I’m a leaver, but I’m in the fight, here to stay I’m a dreamer”. The song even references the classic romance film, Casablanca, with the line “I stand in the middle of it all just looking at you, here’s looking at you kid. Song #7 is “Bittersweet Life”. This is an older song that fan may recognize as formerly being known as “How to Call A Bluff”. This song leaves the listener with a feeling of optimism: “It’s a bittersweet life, and it’s leaving me a-ok”. One of the best parts of My Favorite Highway is their unfailing optimism. They always manage to bring a smile to my face. This song is followed by “What Are You Waiting For”, a song encouraging the listener to live life, and stop waiting around. “The Chase” is a slower song, but one that fans adore. It’s a love song, it me it seems he’s singing to a girl who’s so unhappy with herself that she just wants to hide from everyone. The song is his way of telling her that he’ll do whatever it takes to get to her, let her let him in. He doesn’t mind the chase. David Cook’s voice radiates empathy. The speed of the album picks up with “Entertain the Pain”. It’s a song about a guy trying to get over the dreaded ex. He’s debating if he should “entertain the pain” and allow the thought of her into his head. Despite the topic being a common one in music, the band manages to make this song unique, specifically with its catchy verses. Finally, and too soon, the album ends on a ballad, “Steel City”. This song is in reference to the time David Cook spent in Pittsburg (Pennsylvania). My personal favorite part of the song lies in the contradictory lines “I wanna be fixed, I wanna be broken/I wanna be closed, I wanna be open”. Almost too quickly, the album is over and you’re ready to replay it. The actual album itself is only 11 songs. However, fans receive a nice bonus: two acoustic tracks. iTunes has the tracks as part of the album, but if you’re a hardcopy fan (like myself), place the album into the computer and visit myfavoritehighway.com/bonus to receive the tracks. The first is an acoustic, slowed down version of “Bigger Than Love”. The second track is an acoustic version of “Forfeit”, a song which was not released by the band in its original form. Despite not having the original form, I’m happy the band released this acoustic song. It was definitely a great addition. Overall the album is a great collection of song. The band’s upbeat, catchy yet meaningful nature makes me sure that they are going to be a great radio hit! Check them out!!
Also, if you go to www.myfavoritehighway.com/ and register, you’ll receive a FREE acoustic version of “Say So” that is to die for!
