I woke up one morning with a strange discovery. On my desk, I found a pile of hair. Was this some strange practical joke? The hair was all pretty short, a combination of dark and light. I didn’t know what to make of it. Did someone get their hair cut on my desk? No, it would make more sense if they just put it there afterwards, for me to clean up, I concluded. I left it there for the time being, and I went to check my e-mail.
While I was on the internet, I came across a Lifehouse forum thread titled “What happened to Jason’s Hair?” Weird, I thought. Did he dye it a weird color or something? I clicked on the link and there was a picture of, what I thought at first was Rick singing and playing guitar, but upon further examination I realized it was Jason, completely bald. As I connected the two incidents together – the hair on my desk and this form thread, I was scared and confused – now I knew whose hair it was, but how? I continued to read the post:
“ Jason showed up at the Plymouth concert completely bald! He said to the audience, ‘I don’t know how it happened. I woke up this morning and my hair was gone. I’m really confused about this.’ That’s all we’ve heard about it so far. What happened?!! Does anyone have any more information about this?”
Response: “Oh, man, that’s a sad thing. What crazy fan has the nerve to go and steal Jason’s hair while he’s asleep? I wonder if we’ll ever find out who did it! I hope they get arrested or something! Seriously, that’s sick!”
Response: “Yeah, totally! Poor Jason! I hope this gets resolved somehow.”
I closed the forum. There were several more comments, but I couldn’t read them anymore. “If anyone ever finds out I have Jason’s hair, I’m in for it!” I said.
“What was that?” asked my sister.
“Oh, nothing!” I said.
How could this have happened? I couldn’t have sleepwalked all the way to Plymouth from here! Maybe I was framed! What is this? Why? Why would someone want to frame me for this? I thought as I stared at the pile of Jason’s hair on my desk. I could be arrested if anyone finds this, I thought. I have to return it to Jason as soon as possible! I carefully collected the hair and put it into a plastic bag, and then I put the plastic bag into a paper bag. Fortunately I was headed to the Toms River Fest that day, where Lifehouse was going to perform. So I put the bag of hair in my purse and I was on my way.
I got to the concert line, where my friends were talking. “So do you guys have any idea what happened to Jason’s hair?” “I bet it was Bryce.” “No way! Even Bryce isn’t THAT mean. It was definitely some over-crazed fan who just wanted to have a piece of him.” “I mean who would DO that?” I didn’t say anything. No one suspected me, because I’m naturally a quiet person.
I slipped off to find Lifehouse’s tour bus, in case they’d be around somewhere. I spotted it, and Lifehouse was just coming out. “Hey, Jason!” I yelled. Jason came over. He looked so weird without his hair. He looked like a completely different person. And he looked so much older.
“Hi, Sylvia.” He said. Oh, yeah – he knew who I was. Maybe he would understand about the hair.
“Um,” I said. I just sort of handed him the bag, without saying anything. I had no idea how he’d react.
“What’s this?” he asked. “A gift?”
“Well, not really,” I said nervously. “I don’t know how I got it! I just found it in my room when I woke up! I didn’t steal it, really!”
Jason looked confused. He opened the paper bag and pulled out the plastic zip-lock full of hair. He looked at the hair, and his eyes widened. “Oh, this is MY hair!” he said. He looked back at me, confused.
He’s never gonna believe me, I thought. Jason’s gonna hate me for the rest of my life! I should have sent it in the mail. That would’ve been a better idea.
“I thought you’d want it back,” I said, almost in tears.
“Thanks,” he said, staring blankly at the bag of hair.
I quickly got back to the line before he could say anything else. Thinking back, I thought, what kind of a ridiculous story is that? I just woke up and found the hair? Jason would be stupid to believe me! I don’t even believe myself.
So the concert started, and I kept wondering what Jason thought of the whole incident. Let me just say, he looked really weird without his hair. I couldn’t get over it. He didn’t mention anything about it at this show. The band just acted like nothing was different.
After I came home, I was going away for a week to a camp where I wouldn’t have any TV or internet, so I would have no idea what was going on with the hair mystery. During that week, I thought about what could have happened – what could have led to such an incident. Who would go to all the trouble of cutting off Jason’s hair and putting it in my room? I remembered an incident where I was talking to my friend Anna at Starbucks, and she said to me, “If you had to have one or the other, would you rather have Bryce’s foot or Rick’s arm?” And not wanting Bryce or Rick to be without a limb, I said, “What about Jason’s hair?”
That’s it! Anna was just the sort of messed-up, conniving sort of mischief maker who would do this. I called Anna on the phone. “Anna, I need you to tell me the truth: did you steal Jason’s hair and put it in my room?”
Anna said, “I had no idea it would cause such a commotion on the news or I never would have done it! I honestly didn’t think it was a big deal. But yeah, it was me.”
“The News?!” I said.
“Yeah. Oh, I have to go. My tea water is boiling. Talk to you later.”
When I came home, I found a new interview with Jason on YouTube.
“So Jason, tell me about this whole hair incident. I mean, let’s face it – you look ridiculous!”
“Yeah, I know. I don’t really know what to say, I mean, I just woke up one morning and I was bald.”
“Wow. Did you ever think you just might have gone bald really fast?”
“No, see the thing is, I got the hair back.”
“Oh, how is that?”
“Well, it’s confusing and I’d rather not talk about it.”
“Oh, okay. So, when is your new record coming out?”
“Oh, well, we’re working on that, but right now we’re just going to be touring for a while, you know, so we’re just gonna see how it goes and everything…”
The next morning I woke up to the words “None of it happened – it was all a dream” written on a note on my door. In Anna’s handwriting. Something wasn’t right. I called Anna and said, “Anna, where are you?”
“Shhhhh! I’m gluing Jason’s hair back on,” she whispered. “ I mean – oh, man what a strange dream I had.
“Is he asleep?” I yelled.
“Yeah, but - Oh, shoot! I have to go.” Before she ended the call, I could hear a voice in the background saying, “Wh… Hey, what’s going – AAA!”
That evening there was a new blog from Jason titled, “Hair mystery solved.” It explained the whole story, and at the end it said, “And many thanks to Sylvia, for returning my hair, and for saving Rick and Bryce from possible amputations.”
