So this week's discussion is on "Make Me Over."
As usual, here are the lyrics:
Wrap my arms Around your name Feel your breath Against my pain As i breathe out the past is gone
Empty smile Naked heart Who I Was Falls apart When you're here inside of me
Feel till you're numb Depth perception becoming The new deaf and dumb
I'm losing myself just to find a place in your mind In your mind Changing myself just to stand along in your eyes In your eyes... pull me in Take me out Make me over
Read the wave Ride your fears In this ocean of years We've been here, swimming on
Take me deep Till I find Every corner of your mind We've been here, swimming on
Touch till you taste All the time we are wasting Alone, waiting here
I'm losing myself just to find a place in your mind In your mind Changing myself just to stand Alone in your eyes Your eyes... Pull me in Take me out Make me over and shout me out loud Shout me out loud
and now for my thoughts on it. try as i might, i cant not think of certain parts of this song in a sexual way. im not quite sure that is how jason meant it (probably not, who am i kidding), but yeah.. "when you're hear inside of me," take me deep," etc. its bad but hey, im discussing.
this song reminds me of a point in my life actually. there was a guy that i was very much so into, yet he seemed rather apathetic towards me. when this album came out is actually when this was going on, so hearing this just kinda made me stop and play it again. but basically the whole chorus to me was me telling this guy, "give me a place in your thoughts, ill be what you want me to be, just make me over to be yours." and i dont really think that is a good thing for a person to do and it kinda intrigues me how jason wrote a song like this, but of course, many interpretations are no doubt around.
and the rest of the song kinda falls into that theory...
needless to say i that guy and i had no future and now no longer even talk, the way it should be i think.

allie, I agree with you about how there are some parts of the song that have a sexual connotation to it, and how it's impossible to not think about it in that way. I've never been able to connect with this song because it doesn't seem very coherent to me...I feel like it's a spiritual song, but at the same time, it seems to have these explicitly sexual references yeah...lol I'm looking forward to reading people's interpretations of this song, so I can get my head out of the gutter

this song actually represents how i feel about the guys. "i'm losing myself just to find a place in your mind...changing myself just to stand alone in your eyes." i think we all pretty much want to be recognizable and have them remember our names. its a good feeling, like all this energy we put into them is giving something back to us. i also like that some of it is unhealthy. it does seem to have these negative sides to it. "make me over," in itself, because a person should be who he or she is and not have to remake themselves just so someone can finally see them. i feel like that happens a lot, so i like that side of it. (and i also think dirty things when it comes to those lines, allie).

Laura, I also thought of it as a spiritual song at first - as a plea for God to turn you into a better person, but it seems like the connotations are too negative for that meaning, so I think it's about changing for a person.
And Maureen, I also agree with you about Lifehouse. I think of that every time I hear the song, almost. Just wanting them to know who I am, to make some kind of impression - and I think that kind of thing is addicting. It's not like I'm losing myself exactly, but it definitely changes what I put my energy into. Like I started my comic strip partly because I didn't want them to forget about me.

Okay, I have to catch up.
I never really had a good interpretation for this song, but I guess I sorta see it as life's journey. Some parts are discovering who you are/where you are, for example:
Take me deep Till I find Every corner of your mind We've been here, swimming on
Touch till you taste All the time we are wasting Alone, waiting here
and some parts are about looking back on who you were and wanting to be the person you always wanted to be, and the younger ego saying to the older ego to just be that person you want to be:
Empty smile Naked heart Who I Was Falls apart When you're here inside of me
Read the wave Ride your fears In this ocean of years We've been here, swimming on
and the chorus, for me, kinda symbolizes the interaction between those things. Through life's experiences the person kinda lost track of him/herself and wants to find a way to change back to who he/she was/wants to be.
-- I know it's kind of a weird interpretation, but my mind twists in strange corners to relate to songs sometimes.

This song is too abstract for me to relate to it... :/

I'm really horrible when it comes to interpreting songs. I could love a song and know all the words, but not have a clue what it means. lol. I know this is kinda late, but I thought I'd give this a shot. Wrap my arms / Around your name / Feel your breath / Against my pain / As i breathe out the past is gone
Empty smile / Naked heart / Who I Was / Falls apart / When you're here inside of meI feel that these versus are describing how someone feels when they are with the person they are meant to be with. That the other person is in essence erasing (sort of) the things about you that you'd rather forget, and/or making you better. They are "filling" the parts of you that were "empty" if that makes any sense. Feel till you're numb / Depth perception becoming / The new deaf and dumbOk, I have no clue about this part of the song. I've always wondered. Does anyone have any ideas about what this could mean?? Maybe it has to do with how wrapped up you are in the other person?
I'm losing myself just to find a place in your mind / In your mind / Changing myself just to stand alone in your eyes / In your eyes... / Pull me in / Take me out / Make me overI feel that the chorus is self-explanatory. He (or she) is changing themselves to become what the other person wants...and basically to become what he (or she) wants to be. He (she) wants to be the person that this person already thinks they are. (I also agree with what Maureen said about this part...it really makes sense.) Read the wave / Ride your fears / In this ocean of years / We've been here, swimming on
Take me deep / Til I find / Every corner of your mind / We've been here, swimming onI would say that this means that they have, together, been taking the years as they come, and dealing with all of the issues and problems (waves...fears) that arise. Through all of it, they are still getting to know each other better and better as a result. Touch till you taste / All the time we are wasting / Alone, waiting hereThis part confuses me a bit. "All the time we are wasting alone...waiting here" would lead me to believe that maybe it had something to do with kids, if you know what I mean...but I'm probably all wrong there. I guess that's all I want to say about that lol...I have no idea what else it could mean. I'm also confused about the parts where he says "take me out" and also "shout me out loud." I'm not exactly sure what that could mean. Any ideas?

Feel till you're numb / Depth perception becoming / The new deaf and dumbOk, I have no clue about this part of the song. I've always wondered. Does anyone have any ideas about what this could mean?? Maybe it has to do with how wrapped up you are in the other person? I always thought it was something like, saying to give your entire heart/soul into something. (feel until you're numb). And then the depth perception is like don't think about how involved you are, it's "deaf and dumb", you can't tell how deeply into this you are getting. I still don't quite know what the song means. I agree with Klein, it's a bit too abstract for me, although, I do like Koen's interpretation. So anyway, I just assumed it had something to do with a relationship, so that verse for me is like saying "give it your entire heart and don't worry about how deep you're getting.

Wow, guys, nice interpretations. I'm with you the rest of you. I think that this song is about one person "making" themselves over for the other person. The song does have it's confusing parts, too. Someone should quiz Jason on this one the next time they see him! Every time these threads come up, I'm always excited to just go through the lyrics one more time and really absorb them. When I go back and look at them, I really realize what a lyrical genius Mr. Wade is.

I was wondering if this song had anything to do with his own experiences or experiences of others he's seen being made over to succeed in the music business. Or possibly the way that fans play with their individual identities to be noticed, like was said before. Changing the way you might dress, act, smile, etc. And the other possibility I was thinking of was talking about the music itself being made over. Now that I read the lyrics back to myself, it does make sense that he might be talking about the way he might have to compromise the essence of music he is creating from his "naked" heart and how some of the original magic is gone when producing and recording the music. Hence the "Shout me out loud" at the end could be getting other people to like the songs? Not saying this is what Jason was thinking, but it does kind of work as an interpretation. I can be pretty concrete, though.
Although, I definitely understand the "take me deep" sexual connotation, it does go on to say "till I find every corner of your MIND" so is it kind of meant to mean something deeper than just physical.
