week 2!!!
Nerve Damage
I see thru your clothes Your nerve damage shows Trying not to feel Anything that's real You're losing control
Meltdown's looking for a new clown Living in a world that's make believe Used up burned out always got a hand out Ain't nothing here for free Now you're hanging on the edge of tomorrow Let go let it be
New circus freak With black eyes that speak Life takes it's toll You push and it pulls You're losing control
Meltdown's looking for a new clown Living in a world that's make believe Used up burned out always got a hand out Ain't nothing here for free Now you're hanging on the edge of tomorrow Let go let it be
I see thru your clothes Your nerve damage shows You're losing control
Meltdown's looking for a new clown Living in a world that's make believe Used up burned out always got a hand out Ain't nothing here for free Now you're hanging on the edge of tomorrow Let go let it be
Hell bent looking for a god send Kicking down the door waiting for a sign Right side turning on the bright side That might not be what you find Wake up move on nothing left to prove Got nightmares in your dreams

to me, this song is about someone who's trying to put on a disguise to hide what's really going on underneath the surface. but life keeps pulling at him/her and that disguise is falling apart, and all the pain inside is showing. the narrator is trying to tell him/her to just stop pretending and to let it all show.

i'm in pretty much the same camp as you, Maureen. I see it in the light that sometimes you just see a person for who they really are, perhaps when they are at their most vulnerable, when they can no longer put up a front or hide things and you just see the real people, and their 'nerve damage shows'

I like to think its about someone who kind of had a relatively easy going life, little struggle. But now life and emotions and reality are kicking in and this person is trying to put on a mask pretending that they can handle everything, but inside they are falling apart. I kind of take the lines "Used up, burned out, always got a hand out/Ain't nothing here for free" as this person always received help or comfort, but kind of never really had to fend for themselves, so now that the real world is kicking in, they're not quite sure how to handle it (I think i'm interpreting it to relate more to me right now). The song is speaking to this person saying, your mask isn't fooling anyone, not even yourself.
The last line of the song, for some reason, I didn't know what it was for the longest time. When I sang along, I would just mumble it, but then I think not too long ago, I reread the lyrics on iTunes, and figured out what it was. I really like that line. "Wake up move on nothing left to prove/ Got nightmares in your dreams". It's like saying what you always thought you wanted isn't always perfect or easy. Gotta face reality.
Anyway, that's how I take it. Love this song.

(This is my first post in this board. You should all honour it... hi. ) Yuliya, your avatar just made me stop and stare at it for five minutes... just saying. I saw them in May, but I had been broke and hadn't got Smoke and Mirrors yet. I downloaded a few songs the morning of the concert, and this one confused me... I loved the way it started, but I didn't like the middle. They played it that night, and I fell complete in love with it, the raw power... I think I just stood there in complete fanzoidness. I am so annoyed with myself for taking so long to get it! Although I usually analyze lyrics to the bone, this is one song I prefer to just listen to. But the line "Got nightmares in your dreams..." , I also took a while to be able to understand it, and it makes me shiver. To me, I think he's singing to someone who is falling/has fallen apart. They're hurting. They have damaged nerves, basically, and it's kinda nearly as if he's taunting, but he's not, he's just telling the person that he knows...
