Scooter Libby's Sentence Commuted(pardoned)

I find this to be a new low for the Bush adminstration. The president pretty much just pardoned(and will eventuallly fully pardon) the man who leaked the name of a man's wife who was working undercover for the CIA just to get revenge on him. I'm not really suprised that Bush would make this move, just outraged.

Bush: Pardon?

Libby: Well, when you work from home and it's just a matter of walking from your bedroom to your office, they call that "The 30 Second Commute."

Bush: Pardon?

Libby: What I'm saying is, thanks for not making me spend all that time in jail even after a trial by a jury of my peers found me guilty of obstructing justice and endangering the lives of people conducting our war on terror. The veep tells me Karl's got some Swift Boaters lined up to take care of the quarter-mil fine the judge laid on me!

Bush: Pardon.

Libby: Sorry, Mr. President! Can you hear me now? ... You talking on the red phone in your office?

Bush: Totally.

Libby: I thought you'd be rockin' an iPhone by now.

Bush: Good call. (off speaker) Condi, call "Gatesy" and see if he'll hook me up with an iPod.

(unidentified female voice: "you mean, uh, 'Jobsy'?")

Bush: Whatever.

Libby: Awesome. Well thanks again. I know you're taking heat for it already. They say you don't respect the law, the Consitution, due process ... or the military, or poor folks, and Sicko, and blah blah blah! Fuck 'em!

Bush: That's harsh, dude. Hey, it's good to hear from ya Scoot-man, but I'm real busy today, and yer like, talkin' my ear off.

I thought he'd pardon him, but I didn't think it would be so soon, before he even served a day prision or even finished the appeals process. I thought he'd wait until the lame duck period in 2008, so not to hurt the Republicans running for president. I mean if he really needed to do it this week he should have done it on the 4th because he probably would have gotten away with it. I really wish that the President and Vice President would have the decency to resign.

Lewis "Scooter" Libby, who was immediately reinstated as chief of staff for Vice President Cheney following Bush's announcement, is currently being held by the Metro Police under suspicion of having robbed a liquor store on his way back to the White House early this afternoon.

"I think the pardon is supposed to apply to that, too," Mr. Libby said, speaking by cell phone from the Washington, D.C. 2nd Police District station.


A team of Republican senators led by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is now attempting to have Patrick Fitzgerald arrested for "sustained harassment and pestering" of Mr. Libby. A civil suit has also been filed against the special prosecutor by lawyers for Mr. Libby seeking damages for "emotional stress and foot trauma" associated with the exposure and subsequent reprinting of Mr. Libby's widely derided fictional novel, The Apprentice.

Libby's novel, which he claims is not autobiographical, features incest, a hunter who considers whether to engage in an act of bestial necrophilia with a freshly killed deer before it gets cold, and a girl who is kept in a cage and raped by a bear to train her to become a prostitute.

"It's not the pure pulp you'd expect from a hack like Bill O'Reilly," says Libby, "although both of us are admittedly experts at creating and sustaining fictional scenarios. That's the nature of our work."

I thought this was a pretty low mark for the administration. If you are a friend of the President, you can get away with anything. I know some people will bring up the Clinton pardons, but what Clinton did is totally different. Marc Rich never lied to federal investigators to cover up illegal actions of the Clinton White House.

Pardoning people at the end of an adminstration is something that is done by every President. Bush Sr. pardoned pretty everyone involved in Iran-Contra at the end of his presidency. There are no real paralells between Clinton's pardons and Bush's commuting(pardon) of Scooter Libby's sentence. He protected someone who commited a crime that he ordered him to do.
