I agree with Robert on the vast majority of his post there. I’m really glad he stayed something I’ve felt for almost 8 years nowv but hated to admit because I think it’s a brilliant song and a top 5 Lifehouse song for me personally. The studio recording of Crash and Burn is total crap. The instruments and tones are fine. Jason’s vocals are fine at the core. I’m not a fan of the layered vocals during the chorus but that was the style for the band at the time. There’s absolutely no energy or basic human emotion from the track. This is the fault of mixing and production. With S&M (we need to find a new, non kinky sex related abbreviation for this album), the band was adamant that some songs were going for a live feel, others were going for studio tricks. Here’s the thing, this is obviously an attempt to capture the live feel of the song- and it falls on it’s face. The early live versions of this song always gave me the feelings with the early live versions of Broken, Take Me Away, and Everything. It was on that level. This should have been a song where you don’t leave the studio until you get it right. Like most things on the S&M album, it doesn’t feel genuine and was just Lifehouse by numbers. Oh well. I still love the song. I just really wish they had gotten it right in the studio.
