i suggest mac also. i know they're beyond your budget, but when my friends and i all purchased laptops for school last year my regular macbook wound up being cheaper than a lot of the ones my friends ended up with (hp, dell, and sony). apple also offers rebates that can get you a free printer and ipod with your purchase. then with the money you'd save on anti-virus protection and maintenance it might make the idea more appetizing. i didn't know how i'd ever get used to the switch, but now that i've had my mac for a while i will NEVER use a windows machine again. i don't know the price ranges, but perhaps a refurb could be an option too? Amen to that. I've had my iBook for nearly 5 years (saved up for a few years to get it) and I haven't had one problem with it. The only money I've put into it was $80 for some additional RAM. While my best friend (college roommate) got an HP laptop the same time and she's already on her 3rd laptop due to it crashing and the virus issues she's had. Once you go Mac you never go back!

mac's basically molested me all through my gradeschool days...*shutters* and to this day they still can't figure out if you have something that is a word document...that you actually want to open in in Word.

unless the newer models fixed that problem...but pretty much any mac i've used has to be told how to open an attachment.

That's interesting. I have an HP Desktop, and I've had it for almost 6 years, no problems at all. I also have an HP laptop, as I mentioned before. No problems there either.. so far.
