Lifehouse #4 on Vh1 Top 20!

Goo Goo Dolls, friends need some caffeine

The unofficial title of the upbeat if occasionally bland combination of acts at Sound Advice Amphitheatre on Friday night could have been the "You Can Take 'Em Home to Mama Tour."

This isn't to say that Cobie Caillat, Lifehouse and headliners the Goo Goo Dolls were not entertaining - because each act, particularly the clean-cuttish Lifehouse, had its magnetic moments. It's that the overall vibe of the evening, attended by fans of every imaginable age group, was pretty family-friendly, even with the slight potty mouth on lead Goo John Rzenik and a surprisingly sexy cover by Lifehouse.

That's mostly refreshing, because if I had a dollar for every case of unnecessary F-bomb droppage at a show this summer, I'd be writing this thing from my private island in the Caribbean.

Occasionally, though, the energy flagged when the acts got too much into a samey-same groove - it happened with all three - with the crowd seemingly anxious for them to break out and do something else, already.

The young Caillat, a talented songwriter possessed of a pleasing rasp to her melodic voice, is a find, although it's clear she's not that comfortable yet being on stage, at least not a larger one - her body language was all "now I'm posing like this, and now like this." But she'll be OK - her most well-known song, Bubbly, is a giddy, wonderfully catchy exercise in romantic vulnerability and happiness. Good girl.

Lifehouse, best known for its earnest love songs like Hanging by a Moment and the lovely You and Me, was the surprise of the night, mostly because it was so much more interesting live than its solid but slightly sappy singles would suggest. Lead singer Jason Wade has a magnetism that doesn't come through on the radio - the highlights of his set was the swaying, reggae-tinged The Joke, the a cappella singalong on You and Me and a shockingly hot stripped-down cover of the Rolling Stones' Beast of Burden. Let me tell you - the line "All I want is for you to make love to me" is even more interesting coming from a seemingly nice boy.

The Goo Goo Dolls are also blessed with a charismatic lead singer. Rzenik is beefier than in the band's '90s heyday but still has that deliberately swingy, blunt-cut band-boy hair, and when he's onstage you can't take your eyes off him.

But as good as they are, and as solid as their songs are, they suffered the most from that aforementioned flagging of energy, with so many numbers of similar tempo and feel that had you going, "Didn't we hear that already?"

But there were some great moments - the black balloons floating through the crowd on Black Balloon (duh), the bitterly cutting We'll Be Here (When You're Gone), the steady Let Love In, and Name, their first big hit and arguably still their best - Rzenik's scratchy vocals were never more effective than on the quiet, yearning parts.

I recorded the VH! Top 20 countdown (cause I'm a nerd) and just watched it, and thought I'd let you guys know that Lifehouse was the Top20's "fact or fiction" of the week. Basically, what it is, is that VH1 says a "fact" and people text in whether its true or not. This week's was kind of funny:) :
