My Morning Jacket- Evil Urges
With all the hype of how this is something totally different than what MMJ has done before I was really expecting to be floored like the first time I listened to Kid A. While that didn't happen, the album does set the bar pretty high for any other releases this year.
The album kicks off with "Evil Urges", which happens to be the first track featuring Jim James' falsetto stylings. The falsetto voice has been missing in rock music the last 20 years until it was revived by Kevin Griffen (Better Than Ezra) and by Muse. "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream" reminds me of "Gideon" from "Z" with the arpeggio guitar throughout the song. "Highly Suspicious" reminds me of my first listen to "Supermassive Black Hole" by Muse. It was a "Where the hell did this come from?" feeling that came over me. MMJ does dance grooves.
The album hits the brakes with "I'm Amazed" which easily could have been on "It Still Moves" or "Tennesee Fire" and features a great guitar solo. "Thank You Too" reminds me of another southern US rock band, The Band. Great vocal harmonies and a very catchy chorus. The old school MMJ vibe continues with "Sec Walkin'", which as I make my way through feels like this albums "Golden"---but only for now.
"Two Halves" has a very 1950's rock feel to it. I can't put my finger on it, but I really enjoy the vibe to this song. "Librarian" is a mostly solo Jim James song with some strings filled in at the end of the song.
Next up is my favorite from the disc, "Look At You". Where I thought "Sec Walkin'" was this albums "Golden", that honor now belongs to "Look At You". Great acoustic work on this song.
The album picks up with "Aluminum Park" and "Remnants". Both are thumping guitar driven songs with killer solos. I could easily have heard either of these alongside "Anyway" from the "Z" album.
To finish up the disc are two epic numbers, "Smokin' From Shootin'" and "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part Two". "Part Two" has a intro for the first 90 seconds that reminds me of "Wordless Chorus", and then finishes up with a beautiful climactic finish. Perfect song to close the album.
Overall 8.5/10
(This is all based off of my first initial listen. As the album sinks in a bit more I can give further detail.)
