Numbers (2007)
Days Difference
1. Last Night
2. End of the Line
3. Unaware
4. Inside Out
5. Burn Out
6. Better Skies
7. Faltering
8. Parallels
9. Sidewalks
10. Stay
This band hails from Virginia Beach and could probably be seen as the North American answer to the reign of Alternative Rock from the UK (think Coldplay, U2, Keane, Snow Patrol, Kooks, Air Traffic, etc.).
While being placed in the same corner of the music spectrum, Days Difference obviously adds another dimension to the songs.
Jeremy Smith's vocals do sound similar to Chris Martin's (Coldplay), however he seems to be able to do even more with it. Another advantage is that Days Difference isn't outhyped (yet?).
They bring you "Numbers", a very strong and professional album with nothing but strong tracks on it. It's melodic, emotional, and convincing. A collection of 10 songs, which sounds perfectly right. Not a CD with 18 songs where you feel that half of it doesn't even fit on the CD, musically. Just 10 songs that make a great album. The combination of guitar and piano and the way they interact is something a lot of bands can learn from.
The album starts with the Coldplay-ish Last Night and then continues with End of the Line which, musically, is somewhere in between early Snow Patrol, Saybia, & Our Lady Peace. Then the beautiful Unaware which will appeal to fans of mainstream rock as well as fans of alternative rock. On this track, Days Difference leave no doubt that they can stand their ground against acts like Coldplay & Snow Patrol.
Next is the more upbeat Inside Out which is more 'American' of sound. Listen closely how the electric guitar and piano interact and how it's woven through all of the song. It's almost like a dance of instruments. This song is almost classic rock, and one day will/should be.
Burn Out sounds like a song taken off Coldplay's "Parachutes". Once again the vocal similarities with Chris Martin are apparent. It's not the best song on the album, but it once again shows that this really is the answer to the British Alt. Rock scene.
Then we hear Better Skies which is a great song, which reminds me of dutch band 'a balladeer' somewhat. It also hints to bands like Radiohead, Snow Patrol & Athlete. Faltering, the 7th track, is rivaling bands like Keane & Saybia. Vocally it's 10 times better than Keane, and the melodic lines are painfully beautiful. This is one of those little gems that you find on an album when you listen to it all the way through.
Parallels will be a classic. Listen to the great piano work, and how the bass/drums have an amazing supporting role. They really lead this track into the realm of amazing songs. Think Elbow & Athlete, just more alternative, more uptempo, and just more rock. It almost sounds like it's from another time. Sidewalks a very emotionally performed song. Great vocals, musically similar to (for example) the band 'Desert City Soundtrack', though qualitatively much better. The album closes with the obivious and beautiful single Stay. It is almost Ben Folds mixed with Snow Patrol & Thirteen Senses. This is what alternative piano-based rock should sound like. Passionate, committed and so beautiful it almost hurts.
Numbers is a great album of a band that we will, without a doubt, here much more of. Days Difference takes its place on the musical map and it is a place well-deserved.
