Ell is a pretty song, I like it much more than Luminate. I noticed that Ell is that mysterious 'Ell Stay With Me' song from BMI last October which was registered for that even-more-mysterious 'Willow Offgood' artist that clearly doesn't exist... wonder if Jason was planning to just register it under a fake name. Magnetize was also an Offgood song, along with 'Fly By' which means it's likely going to be the sixth and probably final track from Winzlo Vol 1.

Luminate is boring and mysterious at once. I think that's why i probably like it. I like the "Keep a light on" part I'm starting to like "Ell" after i listened a few times to it.

Could "Fly By" be a different name for "Voyage of the Underling?"
Also, the next preview is up and it's called "Green is Golden."

I'm happy with Jason's solo project, but I miss Lifehouse. I miss them makin' albums and releasin' singles.. so sad 😪 Aside from the folkier songs and the Winzlo EP, can you honestly tell a difference? Like if I dropped an unreleased song with drums and bass...would you be able to tell the difference? I've been with the band hardcore since HBAM, and I honestly wouldn't be able to tell. I love Bryce, but on the bass...John Entwhistle or Flea, he is not. And Rick is an insanely underrated drummer, but he doesn't have a style to his own like Bonham, Jack Irons, or Keith Moon. I just don't see much of a difference between the band and whoever happens to be in the studio with Jason.

I just don't see much of a difference between the band and whoever happens to be in the studio with Jason. I disagree, I do think there's a very different chemistry that comes through in the full-band stuff versus just J. The song that I'm really thinking of in particular is Clarity; when it came out on the Target release of OOTW I figured it was taken straight from Paper Cuts, but once the Paper Cuts version came out with the shaker and lack of bass I realized that the song went from being utterly dull to outstanding just from the inclusion of the rest of the band. It was transformed! Some songs off Paper Cuts did feel more whole, like Goodbye and Chapter Two, but remember that those already had Ricky drumming on them. I also argue that it's not the instruments alone that make them integral to the songs; it's also their musical sensibilities. When Jason is alone, the bass and drums recede to allow his vocals and guitars to take centre stage, but the band has the ability to track songs like Wash or Flight with their unbelievable percussion and not worry about overshadowing anyone because they're acting as a unit. Ricky brings a certain can't-put-my-finger-on-it vibe to several of the songs like The Joke or Right Back Home (which he cowrote) and Bryce brings more of the alternative pop world to the band, which I tend to favour over Jude's more middle-of-the-road pop direction. It's the difference between songs like Here Tomorrow Gone Today and Falling In. I definitely agree that there are some instances where the difference is minor, like Central Park, but I tend to think those are few and far between. My favourite memory of the concert from this past summer was actually Bryce singing Pride (In The Name Of Love) and the whole band just killing it in their respective roles. I remember thinking how much Jason and Steve's guitars sounded like Lifehouse, how Ricky's drumming was somehow recognizable as Ricky, and Bryce's bass playing (which in that particular song is second to none) felt totally original to my admittedly uncultured-in-the-world-of-bass ears.

Yeah. I get that mostly. Clarity is kind of tough to be determining a difference because we've heard the two versions. I think I'm getting at more of if a song that we've never heard of before and we know nothing of when it's registered were to leak, is there enough distinction between band vs. solo to tell right away? I lean towards no. I think that the songs are better full band. But I think that for every song that Jason releases that points towards a full band feeling, the band has (like Wish) that points more towards a solo song. So it can be hard to tell.
And I agree completely on Bryce doing U2. That's one of the best moments for the band in 5+ years. Possibly their best live moment in nearly ten!

Just like I said. Magnetize is the best song of this EP. What a chorus oh my God 😍

I agree...Magnetize is definitely my favorite from this set of songs so far. The next one sounds fairly promising as well, tho.

Magnetize is right up there for me, great song! My ranking so far: 1. Voyage of the Underling 2. Santa Monica (tie) 2. Magnetize (tie) 4. Ell 9. Luminate
I *love* Voyage so so so much, and Santa Monica and Magnetize are both really great tracks too! Ell is pretty good, and I'm totally not feeling Luminate (too close to Coldplay's Midnight as was stated already, even the lyrics of "keep the light on") so I'm hopeful that Green is Golden will round out the EP well. It's interesting to note that that song was BMI'd this past summer, so it may be considerably newer than the others which were all added around the fall of last year.

Yeah you're totally right, the songs themselves (with the exception of some cowritten ones and these recent experimental tracks) don't differ in their most stripped-down states depending on whether they're meant for the band or for J's solo work. I think part of that is that OOTW was originally written as the follow-up to Paper Cuts, and that really comes across in songs like Hurt This Way, Yesterday's Son, and Hourglass. I liken Jason's solo work to that of Jon Foreman; his solo songs aren't necessarily all the different from Switchfoot since he's the principle songwriter for both, but he chooses which ones he thinks should best receive the band treatment and once that could be good with his signature style, and works accordingly. Jason said that Breathe Easy and Where I Come From were written simultaneously, and yet one was chosen for Lifehouse and the other for his own album.

According to Jason, Green is Golden is the last track for Winzlo EP 1. I really like this track. My ranking for this EP would be:
1. Voyage of the Underling 2. Magnetize 3. Green is Golden 4. Santa Monica 5. Ell 6. Luminate
So next round is Winzlo EP 2 I presume? It'd be interesting if on the next EP, Jason would integrate more world-music sound into his songs. Something ala Linkin Park's Numb (Japan's influence) Selena Gomez's Come & Get It (India's influence). Because I do hear a bit of Japan's flavor in Voyage of the Underling which is one of the reasons I like the track a lot.
